Nantes is accessible by various forms of transportation, but chances are you’ll be coming in by plane or by train. Once here, you may need to arrange further transportation to get to, and around in, the city. So, we’ve put together a bit of information to help you with your options.
Arriving by plane:
Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE) may be the largest airport in western France, but for an international airport, it’s quite small and fairly easy to negotiate. Since it’s located about 7 miles outside of the city, in the community of Bouguenais, getting from the airport to Nantes will require some form of transportation; these options are airport shuttle and taxi. The easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport to Nantes is via the airport shuttle; there are three per hour and the ride takes about 20 minutes. The shuttle makes several stops; these include Nantes central train station (Gare SNCF) and Commerce (the final stop and tram hub).
Getting from Nantes Atlantique Airport to Nantes Centre-Ville (City Center):
Step 1: Exit the Airport Baggage Claim area
Step 2: Exit Hall 1 of the Airport
Step 3: Cross the street to the shuttle bus stop
Step 4: When the shuttle bus arrives, purchase your ticket from the driver
Step 5: Validate your ticket on the bus
Step 6: Find a seat and enjoy the 20-minute ride to Nantes
Step 7: Keep an eye on the digital info board, which tracks the stops. Exit when the bus reaches your destination.
Airport Shuttle Single Ticket (Ticket navette aéroport) = 7.50€; Valid for one-way travel on the airport shuttle and on the Tan network for up to 1 hour from validation.
Arriving by train:
If you’ve arrived in Nantes via train, getting from the station to the city center is quick and easy. It’s a 17-minute walk from Gare SNCF, the central train station, to Centre-Ville, the city center, or a short tram ride to the tram hub at Commerce (Tramway Line 1; 3 stops).
Getting around Nantes via Tramway:
The tramway system consists of 3 separate lines; Line 1 runs east-west, lines 2 & 3 run north-south. The hub for the three lines is Commerce, which is also accessible by airport shuttle bus. The trams are all above ground; no need to climb multiple staircases. They serve most of the sights and attractions in the city, and the ticket prices are fairly inexpensive. Ticket options available include:
Single ticket (valid 1 hour from time of validation, for 1 person) = 1.50€ (purchased at ticket kiosk); 2.00€ (purchased from driver)
Single ticket (valid 24 hours from time of validation, for 1 person) = 4.60€
Group ticket (valid 24 hours from time of validation, for up to 4 people) = 7.50€
Keep in mind that in Nantes it’s also very easy to get around on foot.
