Milan Castello Sforzesco

CASTELLO SFORZESCO, built in the 14th century as a fortress for the ruling Visconti family of Milan, served as a military installation, protecting the Duchy of Milan from invasion by its enemies.  Following demolition by the Milanese opposed to Visconti rule, the massive Sforza Castle was reconstructed in the 15th century under the direction of Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan at the time. It is for the House of Sforza that the castle is named.   History in this region was tumultuous and the castle changed hands over the centuries, passing from the Dukes of Milan to the conquering French, Spanish and Austrians before being retaken by the Milanese, with each group leaving its mark, whether through expansion, renovation or interior decoration. Sforza Castle now serves the City of Milan as a collection of museums. Visitors who pass through the fortress gates can enjoy the castle grounds (free) or view the various exhibits within the castle (minimal admission, check website for rates).  The museum collections consist of paintings, reliefs, period furnishings, weapons and musical instruments.  Notable pieces of art include, the unfinished ‘Pietà Rondanini’ (ca. 1564) by Michelangelo. And, if you can’t get in to see Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous work ‘The Last Supper’, in the nearby church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, you may want to visit the castle’s Sala delle Asse.  Here you’ll see the frescoed walls and ceiling painted by Leonardo in 1498.
