Milan, a few words about food.

We couldn’t close out our series on Milan without a few words about food, something the Italians do really well.   Milan has a few places you will definitely want to try.  For a tasty snack visit Panzerotti – Panificio Luini, just off of Piazza del Duomo at Via S. Radegonda #16, for one of their delicious pastries.  Known as panzerotti, these pastries are filled with anything from cheese to chocolate, and then fried.  Think of a calzone made with light donut dough.  The ‘classical’ panzerotto, stuffed with mozzarella cheese and tomato, is the most popular, but we really enjoyed the version with ham and cheese.

For dessert, just walk across the street to Cioccolatitaliani for a chocolate and gelato treat. The concept is clever; first they pour liquid chocolate from a chocolate fountain into the cone – your choice of bianco (white) or nero (dark) chocolate – and then top it with your choice of gelato.  So good!

Warning:  This is Italy.  Be prepared to wait.  For this gelato, you’ll place your order and pay at the register (select the size of cone or cup).  You’ll be given a receipt and your customer number.  Join the crowd gathered near the counter, to wait for your number to be displayed on the board.  Be patient.  The wait can be VERY long.  One of the negatives of Italian culture is the prevalent crowding and lack of queuing; even with the number system, everyone just clusters together crawling over each other to reach the counter.  No doubt to get a look at the chocolate fountains and gelato flavors available.

For another tasty gelato option, try Grom, an eco-friendly artisanal alternative.  Grom offers delicious gelatos and fruit sorbets, produced with a focus on organic ingredients.
