Istanbul – Getting Around with Public Transportation
The majority of the tourist sights and attractions in Istanbul are located in Sultanahmet-Old City. These include the Spice Market, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cisterns, and the Grand Bazaar. Here’s our step-by-step guide to help you get from the Taksim area to Istanbul’s Old City:
Step 1: Make your way to the funicular station escalators in Taksim Square.
Step 2: Follow the signs for Kabataş.
Step 3: Purchase tokens for the funicular/tram/metro at the kiosk (4 tokens per person, round trip). Regardless of destination 1 token is required for each transfer. Your journey from Taksim to Sultanahmet will involve 1 funicular ride + 1 tram ride.
Step 4: Use 1 token to get through the turnstile for access to the funicular.
Step 5: Take the funicular to Kabataş (Tram Line: T1).
Step 6: At Kabataş, exit the funicular and the station.
Step 7: Follow the signs to the tram platforms.
Step 8: Use 1 token to get through the turnstile for access to the tram platforms.
Step 9: Board the tram for your designated stop; main tram stops for Line T1 include: Eminönü (Spice Market), Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cisterns, Topkapi Palace), Beyazit-Kapaliçarşi (Grand Bazaar).
